IRAQ: BAGHDAD FOLLOWING NIGHT OF AIR ATTACKS

(18 Dec 1998) Arabic/Nat It's business as usual this morning in Baghdad, with little evidence of tension despite a second night of air attacks. Iraq's capital came under fresh U-S-British missile strikes hours before dawn, following a barrage of strikes several hours earlier. An Iraqi health official says at least 25 people have been killed and 75 injured over the last two days. Downtown Baghdad. It may be a city under siege, but many aspects of ordinary life continue. Wedding celebrations went on into the early hours, as is the custom, despite the constant threat of aerial bombardment. Traffic was has been light in keeping with the Muslim Sabbath. There are though some external signs of the impact on the attacks just before dawn - the falling price of Iraq's currency. Some people are preserving their savings by buying up other currencies - including, ironically, U-S dollars. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "After the American strike, rates of the dollar have gone up from 175,000 dinars to 185,000. People are taking advantage of the situation and changing money." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop, Money Changer Just hours before sun rise the city's skyline was aglow from the missile attacks. But that did not keep people away from this busy Baghdad market. They may well be stocking up with goods for what is expected to be a sustained period of strikes. Iraqis are used to living through troubled times, and appear defiant in the face of the latest air raids. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "I tell you frankly, this is Iraq's sovereignty and dignity and we will defend our country no matter what the burden is." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "God Damn America. It will get nothing. Should they destroy our infrastructure we will be able to rebuild everything. SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop The business as usual policy seems also to have been adopted by Iraq's military. U-S experts say Baghdad is adopting a rope-a-dope strategy -- laying back and taking the blows to avoid exposing its ground or air forces to destruction. Iraqi's are eagerly getting any details about the strikes and their government's response from daily newspapers. There is heavy censorship in Iraq - many here regard Saddam as a hero taking a valiant stand against the West. But Saddam's political survival will depend on whether there is a groundswell of unrest against his dictatorship among ordinary Iraqi's.
