Here's what's important in Chapter 4, Divided in 2 parts: -the chapter opens with more rumors: Gatsby is a bootlegger (someone making and/or selling alcohol during Prohibition), or he is a nephew to Von Hindenburg (an allusion to an actual German military leader during WWI that connects him to an "anti-American dream" person). -Nick writes down all the names of people who come to Gatsby's parties that summer. East Coast old money people are Yale graduates like Nick and Tom and people with English and German last names who seem like industrialist leaders, whereas the new money names are more Irish, Eastern European, and Jewish, and are people in the entertainment industry. -A new character is introduced, Klipspringer, also know as the boarder, who stays in Gatsby's house just because. -Then the novel gets back to the plot, which is when Gatsby actually stops over to Nick's and invites him to have lunch in the city -As they drive downtown, Gatsby tries to tell Nick about his past, but it sounds fake even as Nick is hearing it. Gatsby characterizes himself as aimlessly traveling around Europe after the war, which was typical of the Lost Generation and then shows Nick his medal of honor from Montenegro. -Nick is even more perplexed, but not as much as he will be later over lunch, where he meets Gatsby's friend, Meyer Wolfsheim, an obvious gangster. -This character is modeled after a real person, Arnold Rothstein, who was the head of the Jewish mob in the early 1900s -Then Tom shows up in the restaurant and an awkward introduction occurs between Gatsby, Nick and Tom -This chapter also includes a very important backstory about Daisy growing up in Kentucky and how she met Gatsby when he was in the military. Jordan tells Nick this story later that afternoon when they have tea. She also tells Nick that Mr. Gatsby has asked a favor, for Nick to invite Daisy to tea so he can see her. Turns out that Gatsby has been in love with Daisy since that time and bought his house so he could see hers across the bay (the Green Light)!
