Wide pan of site STORYLINE A one-and-a-half metre tall Buddha sitting in the lotus position has been discovered near the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek, by a joint Russian-Kyrgyz archaeological expedition lead by the Russian State Hermitage. In what is believed to be a former temple, archaeologists in their fifth season of digging unearthed the massive statue which they believe to be from the 8th to 10th century. The top half of the Buddha, in a state of disrepair, was taken away for reconstruction. Currently, only the legs of the Buddha in the lotus position remain. This large area, in what is now a cow pasture and formerly a Soviet collective farm, is home to three separate structures - one of which, a large Buddhist stupa, stood in what scientists believe to be an ancient monastery. Such a large statue is an unusual finding in the remote mountainous republic of Kyrgyzstan, an area not known for its pre-Islamic buddha presence. "It is far from an ordinary discovery because a small number of Buddhist religious structures are known in Central asia. They are mostly concentrated in the territory of southern Tajikistan and southern Uzbekistan - the territory of northern Bactria," said a representative from the Hermitage, Asad Targoev.
