Known as America’s Van Gogh, outsider artist Ralph Albert Blakelock created art far ahead of his time, sojourned with the Sioux, went mad, and spent nearly 20 years in an asylum before emerging into the glare of flashbulbs as the most sought-after painter of the 1910s. Through their 2020 Mellon Fellowship at the Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry, “Documenting Blakelock,” filmmaker Ric Burns and University of Chicago professor Lawrence Rothfield attempt to capture this kaleidoscopic life and Blakelock’s dizzying art in a series of programs and courses, culminating in a documentary film.
