Abbie works with resin and colors to create the blanks to be turned in to pens and Jon does the turning on his lathe! This channel is a place for us to share the process with all of you. Thank you for being here! In this video, we are casting a piece of Red Malle Burl with Fordite pieces in Alumilite Resin to make a block of pen blanks. Fordite, also know as Motor Agate, is automotive enamel paint formed from the old practice of hand-spraying cars on the production line. The overspray created layers of paint buildup, creating the gorgeous colors and patterns seen here. Part of what makes it so unique and highly prized is that the automotive industry no longer uses that method of painting cars, so there is a limited amount that has been produced.
