Fernanda Morales-Calva is a fifth-year doctoral candidate in Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience in Rice University’s Department of Psychological Sciences. Her research focuses on human memory and the development of low-cost cognitive tasks designed to detect age-related decline, with a particular emphasis on understanding cross-cultural differences in memory and brain function. Motivated by the underrepresentation of Latino populations in Alzheimer’s and aging research, Fernanda’s work combines behavioral testing and neuroimaging to help address health equity gaps in cognitive science. Beyond her research, she built a strong sense of community at Rice through involvement in groups such as Fulbright, LAGSA and the Graduate Student Ambassador Program, as well as her role at Valhalla, the graduate student bar. As she prepares for the next step in her career, Fernanda hopes to continue advancing inclusive research and inspiring future generations of scholars.
