I started my schooling at age 12, enjoying reading and learning. My teachers were supportive, and I often helped my classmates by explaining lessons in sign language. The Deaf community encouraged me to pursue teaching, and I became an interpreter. I completed my B.A. and M.A. to improve my knowledge and skills, which helped me explain and contextualize information better. I noticed how systemic barriers affected the confidence and culture of Deaf individuals. I realized the importance of meeting with hearing interpreters in advance to prepare for smooth communication. Driven to learn more, I pursued a Ph.D. and later moved to Gallaudet University, USA, where I taught and worked to increase support for Deaf education. I believe access to sign language is vital for Deaf children to succeed, gain confidence, and respect their culture. Without it, Deaf people may be looked down upon, reinforcing the charity model. Education is key to creating an equal playing field. My goal is to establish a partnership between Gallaudet University and India to improve Deaf education and promote equality for the Deaf community.
