Join my quest in discovering some inexpensive Neumann KM-84 clone microphones. When I started recording my band's first bluegrass album this year I wanted to find/build some great microphones for the project. That led me down a path to discover there's a number of great options. This is all just for fun – nothing too scientific here, but I definitely learned which mic(s) I'd want to use next time. The microphones I compare in this video are (in no particular order): 1. Neumann KM-184 2. Microphone Parts SDC-84 3. KM84+ (clone circuit in a Takstar CM-60 donor mic) 4. KM84++ (clone circuit in a Takstar CM-63 donor mic) The kind forum members GroupDIY forums (https://groupdiy.com/forums/microphon...) have been instrumental in helping me discover and understand what makes a good microphone, and more importantly, how to build one. Jan Postma, a friend I met through the forum, has designed some excellent KM-84 clone circuits that fit into inexpensive Takstar microphones. His designs include filters that reject RFI/EMC noise and, in my opinion, that makes his microphone circuit stand above the other mics compared in this video. Not only do they reject RFI well and sound great, they also have fairly low self noise – a winning combination. Jan is working at rebuilding his website, but keep an eye out on his projects as they will likely be available for purchase soon and you can build your own KM-84 style clones using his circuits. The raw WAV files for this video (and more) are available here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/341xso... In order to keep the preamps the same, I used a Zoom H6 for the recordings at 96kHz/24-bit. For each recording I set the preamp level to where the level bar would be about the same for each. Then, I loaded each of the files into Logic Pro and adjusted the gain so each file is level matched. No EQ, compression, or any other plugins were added to the tracks. Neumann KM-184 https://www.neumann.com/en-us/product... Microphone Parts SDC-84 Kit: https://microphone-parts.com/products...
