(19 Jul 2019) Tourists in the Greek capital Athens on Friday described the moments an earthquake hit earlier in the day. Clare Armstrong, a tourist from Ireland, said she was eating lunch with her family at a nearby fast food restaurant when she felt a rumble. She saw people coming out of the buildings around her. "I found it quite exciting because it was relatively small. I think my daughter got a little bit worried about it, thought it was scary", she added. Paola, a visitor from Brazil, said she sat near the Syntagma Square and waited until the ground stopped shaking. The Athens Institute of Geodynamics gave the earthquake a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 but the US Geological Survey tagged it as a magnitude of 5.3. The Athens Institute said the quake struck at 2:13 pm local time (1113 GMT), some 23 kilometres (14.2 miles) north of Athens. Authorities inspected areas close to the epicentre by helicopter and police patrols but no deaths or serious injuries were reported. The quake caused limited power cuts and communication problems around Athens and the fire brigade reported receiving calls about people being trapped in elevators. The most powerful quake to hit the Greek capital in the last 20 years came in 1999, when a temblor of magnitude 6.0 caused extensive damage and killed more than 140 people.
