Cyberpunk, an offshoot of science fiction, or sci-fi, is often defined by a few core aspects; cyberization, dystopian settings, adapted technology, and a general "style over substance vibe" to its world. But, at the core of almost every cyberpunk series is one question: what does it mean to be human? The science fiction (sci-fi) elements usually serve to explore this question of "what is a human?" for example by having a machine, program, or AI gain sentience. By questioning if technology can think and feel, we gain perspective on what really defines a human being, more than enough for an analysis video essay. Anime is no stranger to cyberpunk, from classic works like Ghost in the Shell, mid era shows like Ergo Proxy or Urobuchi's PSYCHO-PASS, and contemporary series like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an offshoot of the 2077 game. Through an analysis of all of these anime, this video essay will discuss the core theme of cyberpunk, what it means to be human, with all of their takes. Ghost in the Shell focuses on physicality with Major Kusanagi and Puppet Master, Ergo Proxy on suffering with Re-L, Vincent, and Pino, PSYCHO-PASS on free will with Makishima and Sibyl, and Edgerunners on if it even matters at all with David Martinez's story. Though this discussion and analysis of these anime, hopefully this video essay will provide some thought on the question what is a human? 0:00 Introduction 5:38 Ghost in the Shell 16:51 Psycho-Pass 27:08 Ergo Proxy 38:25 CP: Edgerunners 51:25 Final Thoughts #anime #cyberpunkedgerunners #ghostintheshell #psychopass #ergoproxy
