Oligomenorrhea | Causes, Symptoms & How to Treat It by Dr Sreelakshmi | LadyDr.com Oligomenorrhea refers to infrequent or irregular menstrual cycles, typically defined as periods that occur at intervals greater than 35 days apart, with fewer than 9 menstrual cycles in a year. It’s not just a “late period” — oligomenorrhea can be a sign of underlying hormonal imbalances or health concerns that deserve attention. In this video, Dr Sreelakshmi tells us: ✅What is Oligomenorrhea? ✅Causes of Oligomenorrhea ✅What are the symptoms of oligomenorrhea? ✅How to treat oligomenorrhea What is Oligomenorrhea? Oligomenorrhea refers to infrequent or irregular menstrual periods in women of reproductive age. Typically, a normal menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days. If your periods occur at intervals greater than 35 days, or if you experience fewer than 8 periods a year, this may be classified as oligomenorrhea. While occasional changes in cycle length can be normal, consistent irregularity may signal underlying health concerns that require attention. Causes of Oligomenorrhea ● Hormonal imbalances: The most common cause, especially involving estrogen and progesterone fluctuations. Conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can cause irregular cycles. ● Thyroid dysfunction: Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can disrupt menstrual cycles. ● Excessive physical activity or extreme dieting: Intense exercise or very low body fat levels can interfere with ovulation and menstrual regularity. ● Stress: Chronic emotional or physical stress can impact the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that regulates the menstrual cycle. ● High prolactin levels: This hormone, usually associated with breastfeeding, can affect menstrual frequency if elevated. ● Use of contraceptives: Some hormonal birth control methods may lead to infrequent periods as a side effect. ● Perimenopause: In women nearing menopause, irregular cycles may become more common as the body naturally changes. Symptoms of Oligomenorrhea Oligomenorrhea is primarily identified by infrequent menstrual periods, but it can also come with other signs 1. Infrequent Periods ● Having menstrual cycles that are longer than 35 days apart. ● Women may experience fewer than 8 periods per year. ● Periods may come unpredictably or only once every few months. 2. Light or Short Menstrual Flow ● When periods do occur, the bleeding may be lighter or shorter than usual. ● Some women may notice only spotting instead of a full flow. 3. Difficulty in Conceiving ● Irregular ovulation can lead to fertility issues, especially if the condition is caused by PCOS or hormonal imbalances. 4. Hormonal Imbalance Symptoms ● Acne or oily skin ● Excessive hair growth on the face or body ● Hair thinning or hair loss ● Weight gain, especially around the abdomen ● Mood swings or anxiety ● Breast tenderness 5. Pelvic Discomfort or Cramps ● Some women may experience pelvic pain or cramping 6. Dryness or Vaginal Discomfort ● Where estrogen levels are low, there may be vaginal dryness, discomfort during intercourse, or reduced libido. Oligomenorrhea Treatment ● Lifestyle modifications (improving diet, managing stress, achieving a healthy weight) ● Hormonal therapy (like oral contraceptives to regulate cycles) ● Treatment of underlying conditions such as PCOS or thyroid disorders ● Nutritional support and exercise balance Oligomenorrhea and Long-Term Health Though not always dangerous, untreated oligomenorrhea can increase the risk of infertility, endometrial hyperplasia, and osteoporosis, especially if associated with low estrogen levels. For women trying to conceive, identifying and managing the cause of oligomenorrhea is crucial.
