I can never escape the high winds on a trip, but join me as I ride my fat bike to Lake Mineral Wells State Park in Texas, along the trailway that once was a railroad from the 1890s. It's said in 1899 that 33,000 people rode the train to the town of Mineral Wells to soak up the healing mineral water the town was famous for. After the building of the Baker Hotel it was common place for the rich, dignitaries, politicians, movie stars, and foreign travelers to visit here for the water. The Lake Mineral Wells Trailway is 20 miles long and the reclaimed railroad bed is covered with crushed limestone rock and makes a very easy trail to navigate. Like a Rails To Trail project, this trail is under the Texas Parks and Wildlife. It has water and restrooms at both ends and middle with gentle grades and curves through cattle and farming country. During the winter and colder weather you can pretty much take your pick of campsites in the park which also has hike, bike and equestrian trails. While there is primitive hike in campsites, bikes are not allowed on that trail.
