Chelmsford Walk: City Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Essex, and around 30 miles northeast of central London, is the city of Chelmsford. Geographically Chelmsford is situated around the confluence of the River Can and River Chelmer, the latter of which gives the city its name ('ford' meaning shallow river crossing). The Romans built a small settlement on the site of Moulsham, which today is a southern suburb of Chelmsford. They named it 'Caesaromagus' (meaning Caesar's field or marketplace) and its location around halfway between Londinium (London) and Camulodunum (Colchester) was presumably deliberate. In 1199, following the commissioning of a bridge over the River Can by the Bishop of London, a royal charter was granted to Chelmsford by King John. Sometime around the year 1200 construction began on a church, which would eventually become Chelmsford Cathedral, although cathedral status was not granted until 1914. In 1218 Chelmsford became the county town of Essex, which it remains to this day. In 1381, for a brief period of just under a week, Chelmsford became the seat of government of England. This occurred during the Peasants' Revolt during the reign of Richard II. In 1791 the Shire Hall opened. This is the municipal building at the north end of the High Street, visible around the 12-and-a-half minute mark. Later that decade, in 1797, the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation canal opened. This paved the way for growth in Chelmsford. At the time, milling and malting were the main industries. The railway arrived in 1843. Today it is one of the main stops on the Great Eastern Main Line running between London Liverpool Street and Norwich. Around the 1850s, Chelmsford became known for production of agricultural machinery. In 1899 Guglielmo Marconi opened 'The Marconi Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company' on Hall Street, employing around 50 people. Thus, Chelmsford is credited as the 'birthplace of radio', although this statement is disputed by some. In 1912 the company moved to a larger factory on New Street which, in 1920, became the location of the first official publicised sound broadcast in the UK. During the Second World War, Chelmsford, being an important centre for light engineering, was targeted by the German Luftwaffe and was attacked on several occasions. Following the war, the population of Chelmsford grew significantly. In 2012 it was one of three towns to be upgraded to city status in conjunction with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The other two were Perth and St Asaph. Chelmsford is represented in sport by Chelmsford City Football Club who, at the time of writing, play in the National League South. This makes it one of the largest settlements in England without representation in the Football League. Essex County Cricket Club play their home games at the County Ground in Chelmsford. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
