It was a challenge making canes on a lathe with only a 21 inch bed. The longest piece I could turn was 16.5 inches, so I had to segment them using hanging bolts and threaded inserts. It was a design-build project meaning the plan was to build a cane but not sure how. I used as many different materials and ideas I could to prove which was best. I used some Bird's Eye Maple, African Mahogany, Black Walnut, Cherry and epoxy. I casted one piece of Maple Burel in epoxy with Rust colored Eye Candy Pigment. This video focuses on a handsome cane I made as a gift to my brother on his 70 birthday. I made the handle from a piece of Black Walnut sandwiched between two pieces of African Mahogany. I left the details of shaping and grinding the handle out of this video because it was basically the same as another video I made that is coming out soon. In this video I included making the sticks and epoxy spacers. I really like the classy look of the Mahogany and Walnut. They finish well and look very sophisticated. I found this project more difficult than I had expected. Materials didn't match up as well as I expected and using inserts created new challenges. Overall I learned a lot and am very happy with the quality off the final products. I hope you enjoyed the video and remember there will be another walking cane video coming out soon.
