TERI University was established on 19 August 1998 and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a deemed to be university in 1999. TERI University is the first of its kind in India to dedicate itself to the study of environment, energy and natural sciences for sustainable development. TERI University is the globe's rank first university in the field of sustainability. It has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council as a 'A' grade university on 23 March 2013 for a period of 5 years with 3.26 cpga. In its 11 years of functioning, the TERI University has achieved significant progress in creating an institution of higher learning with a strong foundation of research and innovation. The multi-disciplinary nature of the University’s programmes draws talented and bright young students who contribute to the vibrant atmosphere existing in the University. There are currently almost 100 Ph.D students in the University and over 500 students at the Master’s level. In addition, the University runs short term executive development programmes and regular Master’s degree programmes for mid-career government officials. These programmes are carried out on behalf of the Government of India. The University has also established excellent partnerships and collaborative arrangements with a number of institutions overseas, ranging from Yale University in the US, Deakin University in Australia and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) in Malaysia. A particular unique strength of the TERI University also comes from its association with TERI as a research institute of distinction, because this provides fertile opportunities for faculty from the University to work on a diverse range of meaningful research projects and for the students to gain valuable experience working on these. While the TERI University is in the early stages of its exciting journey, the richness of programmes that have been launched already and those that are in the making present a refreshing flavour of innovation and establish a strong relevance for addressing the challenges of tomorrow.
