This session applies the Culture Compass™, a framework developed for using culture as infrastructure, to the development of technologies of tomorrow, including AI systems. We’ll explore AI not just as technology, but as part of our social systems: shaping and shaped by institutions, communities, and individual agency. Using real-world case studies from Africa, the Pacific, and beyond, I’ll show why AI that serves only one sphere risks reinforcing bias and exclusion. And I’ll offer a roadmap for integrating all three spheres to build AI that is culturally respectful, collaborative, and inclusive, protecting not just our right to information, but our right to context, heritage, and agency.
