The Mojave Desert's Pisgah Crater

At approximately 25,000 years of age, the Pisgah Crater considered the youngest of the four large craters in the Lavic Lake Volcanic Field. The other large craters are the Amboy Crater, the Sunshine Crater - which is inside the 29 Palms Marine Corps gunnery range, and in the Rodman Mountains to the west - the mysterious Malpais Crater - which is surrounded by ancient Native American petroglyphs.More than anything else Pisgah is famous for its lava tubes. Geologists have identified 300 caves of various sizes, over twenty of which are large enough for a person to walk through. For safety always go with a group, and because of the extreme heat, it's crucial not to go out onto the lava in the summertime. Once you're inside a lava tube keep your head down and watch out for sharp points of lava on the ceiling, because they can slice right through your hat and into your scalp.
