While working on a previous piece that was very time-based, I sketched out some ideas of experiencing a "4-dimensional circle." I then had the delightful opportunity to try out some circular sound masses with BHC, which culminated in a quirky piece for mixed ensemble. (Many composers have thought about putting shapes in their score, so I know the idea isn't particularly novel - but I had fun!) The piece is called Circles "I" because I might want to explore this concept again and in more depth, should the opportunity present itself. Program Notes: "A circle exists in two dimensions. A circle can be formed as the intersection of a sphere and a plane in 3-dimensional space. The fourth dimension is time. The 2-dimensional circular shapes in this score, mostly formed using the harmonic series of C and D, are experienced in time when performed. Consequently, here are 'circles' experienced in the fourth dimension."
