"Playing In Tune - What Jazz Can Teach Us About Leadership And Team Building." A seminar featuring the Daniel Glass Trio. For more information, please visit: https://PlayingInTune.com/ What can a world-class jazz trio teach us about thriving in today’s fast-moving, ever-changing business environment? In "Playing In Tune," acclaimed New York drummer, author, and educator Daniel Glass—along with his trio—uses live performance, storytelling, and interactive exercises to invite participants into the world of a jazz trio—where real-time collaboration, trust, autonomy, and shared purpose are not just ideals, but requirements for success. Back in 1990, John S. Clarkeson, then president and CEO of the Boston Consulting Group, made a bold prediction: “The winning organizations of the future will look like a collection of jazz ensembles. Leaders will be on the [front lines], not remote. Teamwork and cooperation will increase at the expense of individual competition. Cooperative support will moderate anxiety and encourage risk taking. Leadership will flow to those who can inspire the members of the team to put their best abilities at the service of the team. These leaders will create rather than demand loyalty; the best people will want to work with them. They’ll use the conflict among diverse points of view to reach new insights.” More than three decades later, Clarkeson’s prophetic vision has become a reality. Many 20th-century business models—built around rigid hierarchies, siloed departments, top-down control, and micromanagement—are increasingly out of step with today’s fast-paced, interconnected world. These systems often stifle initiative, limit creativity, and prevent teams from doing what they do best. In contrast, the skill sets driving effective leadership today have long been embedded in the DNA of a jazz group. Rather than relying on habitual, scripted thinking, jazz musicians are trained to respond in the moment. They collaborate in a supportive, ego-free environment built on trust and autonomy, where every member is empowered and encouraged to contribute. Their success depends upon a commitment toward a shared vision. In essence, they are literally required to play in tune. More than just a lecture or concert, Playing In Tune is an immersive experience that puts you onstage with the band—allowing you to witness firsthand the key principles that make jazz ensembles tick: improvisation, flow, decentralized innovation, trust and psychological safety. You’ll also take part in a series of interactive exercises and demonstrations designed to help you experience the “jazz conversation” firsthand—challenging you to listen more deeply, adapt more quickly, and respond more creatively in the moment. Ultimately, this seminar offers a powerful new lens for understanding leadership and collaboration, using the model of a high-performing jazz trio to spark fresh insight—and new possibilities—for your own team. He also leads his own group, the Daniel Glass Trio, featuring Sean Harkness on guitar and Michael O'Brien on bass. Since 2010, Daniel has been the Monday-night house drummer at NYC’s legendary Birdland Jazz Club and has twice been voted one of the world’s top five drummers by Modern Drummer and DRUM magazine readers. Beyond the stage, Daniel has published eight influential books and DVDs on American Popular Music. He also created “From Ragtime to Rock” - a curriculum used in more than 1000 schools in the U.S., Canada and Europe - and has conducted hundreds of clinics, master classes and interactive workshops globally. In these high-pressure, collaborative musical environments, Daniel began to recognize some striking parallels between a top-tier jazz ensemble and a high-performing business team—both thrive on trust, communication, adaptability, and a shared vision. This insight inspired Playing In Tune, an immersive and interactive seminar that challenges leaders to rethink how improvisation, flow, decentralized innovation and other jazz principles can transform their organizations.
