Behind the Badge: Nurse or adrenaline junkie?

David Stevens doesn't play a nurse on TV. In fact, he says working in OHSU's Emergency Department is about as unglamorous as it gets. But that doesn't mean he doesn't experience a fair share of trauma cases coming into the ED. A timely example: the Behind the Badge filming took place the day after the shooting at Clackamas Town Center. That day, David and his team got word to prepare for 15 or more victims. Fortunately, as a level 1 trauma center, OHSU is ready for such events. Not every shift brings this much excitement, but David's philosophy is to make a personal connection with each patient, no matter what brings them into the ED. He's calm under pressure, has a good sense of humor and, when he's in the charge nurse role, is a natural leader to the seven to 12 nurses on shift at any one time. He's just the guy you want caring for you when you come through the door.
