📖 Description St. Stephen, one of the first seven deacons chosen by the Apostles, was known for being “full of faith and the Holy Spirit.” He preached boldly in Jerusalem, performing miracles and defending the truth of Christ. His wisdom enraged certain leaders, who accused him of blasphemy and brought him before the Sanhedrin. Standing before the council, Stephen gave a powerful speech recounting Israel’s history and proclaiming that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. His words cut to the heart, and the crowd became furious. When Stephen declared that he saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God, they dragged him outside the city. There, he was stoned to death, becoming the first Christian martyr. Even as the stones struck him, he prayed: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” and “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” Among those present was Saul of Tarsus, who would later convert and become St. Paul. The Church honors St. Stephen as the Protomartyr every year on December 26th, remembering his courage, faith, and forgiveness in the face of death.
