China’s Role in Africa’s Mineral Value Chain: Help or Harm?

In this episode, Eric Olander is joined by Obert Bore, Critical Minerals Editor at the China-Global South Project (CGSP), to discuss Africa’s growing push to climb the critical minerals value chain. As the world races to secure vital resources for the green energy transition, such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, African countries increasingly demand to process these minerals locally instead of exporting raw materials. The conversation looks at policy shifts in countries like Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where governments are enacting bans and regulations to spur local beneficiation and value addition. The discussion comes amid China's recent decision to grant duty-free access to exports from 53 African countries, offering a major opportunity to increase trade. However, challenges such as poor infrastructure, high energy costs, and limited access to water remain serious bottlenecks to mineral processing in Africa. The video highlights what’s at stake for African economies, the role of international partners, and why building sustainable supply chains is critical.
