Welcome to MUSIC CIRCLE Buddy Rich (1917–1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader, renowned for his unmatched speed, power, and technical brilliance. Born in Brooklyn to Jewish-American vaudevillian parents, he displayed an extraordinary sense of rhythm from infancy, reportedly keeping a beat with spoons by age one. By two, he was drumming, and at three, he debuted on the vaudeville stage as “Baby Traps the Drum Wonder.” By age 11, he was leading his own band, and in his teens, he became one of the highest-paid child entertainers of the era, second only to Jackie Coogan. Rich’s jazz career took off in 1937 when he performed with greats like Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Harry James. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1942 to 1944 before forming the Buddy Rich Orchestra (1945–1948). In 1966, he achieved lasting success with the Buddy Rich Big Band, also known as The Big Band Machine. He gained further acclaim for his explosive solos, stick tricks, and a big-band arrangement of West Side Story. Despite never learning to read sheet music, Rich had an extraordinary ability to memorize and execute complex drum parts by ear. Influenced by jazz drumming pioneers Gene Krupa, Jo Jones, Chick Webb, Ray McKinley, Ray Bauduc, and Sid Catlett, he developed a signature style featuring rapid-fire rolls, cross-stickings, and dynamic solos that blended intense energy with delicate finesse. Beyond drumming, Rich was a multi-talented performer who incorporated tap dancing, singing, and comedy into his act. His influence extended beyond jazz, shaping the evolution of drumming across genres. His legacy as one of the greatest drummers of all time remains undeniable.
