Brownells Firearm Support Technician Caleb Savant is back to answer another of life's nagging questions many of us have wondered about: What's the correct position to mount a red dot sight on an AR-15? Mounting a non-magnifying red dot far forward on the receiver gives you better peripheral vision for situational awareness, and it helps balance out the weight of the rifle. However, Caleb advises keeping the optic OFF the handguard itself, so it's easy to remove the 'guard for cleaning. Since the handguard can shift around a bit under hard use, putting the red dot on the receiver also helps preserve the sight's zero. With a magnifying optic, achieving precise eye relief (the distance between the back of the optic and the user's eye) is mission critical. And if you're using a magnifier with a 1x optic, you'll need to leave enough room between the red dot and the rear of the receiver to install the magnifier WITH the proper eye relief.
