Welcome to Chronicles of Calf and Heifer Rearing. I’m Dr. Ruth, and here we share practical, step-by-step tutorials on raising calves and heifers as a profitable investment in dairy farming. Strong calves and heifers mean stronger, more productive herds. But with calf mortality rates so high, and retardation of calves oblivious, many farmers face delays in growth, delays in first service, which is as high as above 2 years, delayed calving, and low milk production. In this channel, we’ll unlock the secrets to successful calf rearing — from birth to maturity — ensuring healthier animals, higher yields, and a more profitable future for your farm.” These are Targets for Healthy Calves & Heifers ✅ Growth • Holsteins should gain about 800 grams daily pre weaning • Jerseys should gain about 700 grams daily pre weaning • By weaning (9–10 weeks), calves should weigh twice their birth weight ✅ Health • Keep calf deaths (mortality) below 5% • Keep sickness cases (morbidity) below 8% ✅ Breeding • By 13 months, heifers should reach at least half their mature breed weight • Heifers should be ready to get pregnant at 13–15 months (unless seasonal breeding is planned) • First calving should happen at 22–24 months ✅ Future Productivity • Smooth growth = less stress during transitions • Well-raised heifers live longer and give more milk in their lifetime!!!!
