Nucleus: an open source ecosystem for building synthetic cells Wed 17-Dec-2025 16:00-17:00 UTC. Presented by Anton Molina, director of Open Source Ecosystem at b-next, USA Abstract: This talk presents b-next's approach to building open-source synthetic cells through compositional biology. Unlike traditional genetic engineering of living organisms with unknown genome functions, b-next assembles cell-like systems from purified, known components such as ribosomes, proteins, DNA, and small molecules. This compositional approach, based on PURE (Protein synthesis Using Recombinant Elements) systems, enables complete digital description, predictive modelling, and forward design capabilities. The talk introduces Nucleus, b-next's standardised cytosol platform designed to foster collaborative development similar to open-source software projects like Git. By providing distributed access to standardised components and supporting 12 laboratories through developer programs, b-next aims to transform biology from research into true engineering with reproducible, collaborative workflows.
