Compliments are the best way to make someone’s day. Here are a few words and expressions that you can use to compliment people in English. Whether a child does well in school, or your colleague does well on a project, you can say, “Good job!” “Well done!” “Nice job!” or “Good work!” When complimenting someone on something specific, you can say, “I admire your artwork,” “You’re an awesome basketball player!” “Your presentation was amazing,” or “I’m so impressed with your writing.” If you want to compliment someone on their appearance you can say, “You look great,” “You look wonderful,” “You look great today,” or “You look stunning!” When complimenting a male, we usually say, “You look so handsome,” and when addressing a female, “You look so pretty” or “You look gorgeous.” Sometimes it’s good to get specific. So, you can say, “Your haircut looks great,” “She has lovely eyes,” or “He has such a nice smile.” To tell someone older that they look young, you can say, “You look younger every time I see you,” “You're aging gracefully and beautifully,” or “You haven’t aged a day since I last saw you.” To compliment someone on their clothing, you can say, “I love your outfit,” “The watch you’re wearing is fabulous,” “I’m jealous of those shoes” or “You have the best taste in clothes.” Here are a few more expressions to help you make someone’s day: • You're always so well put together. • You have a great sense of style. • You have such a striking presence. • You have a magnetic personality. • You radiate confidence. • You're so photogenic. • You're glowing today. • Your smile lights up the room. Please keep in mind that while complimenting someone is generally considered a polite gesture, there are some taboos to consider when complimenting someone in English, especially in Western culture. Avoid complimenting someone's physical appearance in a professional setting. While it may be acceptable to compliment a colleague's outfit or hairstyle, in a workplace setting, it's generally considered inappropriate to comment on their body shape, weight, or physical features. Avoid using overly familiar or flirtatious language. While it's acceptable to compliment someone on their work or achievements, it's important to keep the language respectful and professional. Using flirtatious or suggestive language could be interpreted as inappropriate and even offensive. Avoid backhanded compliments, which are compliments that are often insulting. For example, saying "You look great for your age" implies that looking good is unusual for someone of that age. And "You look great! Have you lost weight?" implies that the person looked worse before they lost weight. It’s best to avoid these types of compliments. To compliment someone on a new item, you can say, “Wow! Your car looks amazing!” “That’s a great-looking lawnmower,” or “Your new dress is spectacular!” To compliment someone’s home you can say, “I love your home,” “What a lovely home,” “You have such a lovely apartment.” If the space is very welcoming, you can say, “Your house is so inviting.” If it’s warm and comfortable, you can say, “It’s so cozy in here.” If it’s very large you can say, “It’s so roomy and spacious.” To compliment the decorations, such as the furniture or paintings, you can say, “I love the decor,” or “I love the decor here. Did you do this all yourself?” This is a nice way to say that the decorations look so good that a professional designer must have done it. To say that you like where they put things you can say, “I love how you laid it out”. You can also compliment specific items in the house by say things like, “What a beautiful picture!” or “I could live on this couch.” Remember that giving compliments is all about making people feel good about themselves. That’s why it’s important to be genuine, so make sure that your compliments are heartfelt. Now, if you’ve gotten that far in our video, you're clearly an expert in the field of excellent video watching . . . and must be good-looking on top of it. Thanks for tuning in! Keep being awesome!
