SOUNDBITE (English) John Ging, UNRWA Director in Gaza: "Today is our last day of reserves because we've been working here from hand-to-mouth now for quite a long time. So these interruptions on the crossing points affect us immediately. So the immediate impact is that on Saturday morning, we won't have any food to distribute." 21. Wide of Palestinians waiting for supplies STORYLINE A UN official warned on Thursday that Israel's closure of Gaza border crossings means that the UN Relief and Works Agency will not have enough supplies to deliver food to some 750-thousand Gaza residents as of Saturday. John Ging, the director of UNRWA in Gaza said that Thursday is the last day of reserves. "The immediate impact is that on Saturday morning, we won't have any food to distribute," he said. Israel has kept its crossings sealed with Gaza for nine days. It said the closure came in response to ongoing Palestinian rocket and mortar fire at the Jewish State. Israel had said small quantities of food aid would be allowed in on Thursday. But Ging said the aid agency was informed during the course of the morning that the crossings would be closed for security reasons. At the Kerem Shalom and Nahal Oz crossings trucks expecting to load supplies entering from Israel were left empty. "We had despatched our trucks to the crossing point to bring in the immediate needs but unfortunately we have, during the course of this morning, been informed that it will not now open for security reasons," Ging said. Some 30 trucks of food aid were meant to reach Gaza on Thursday to replenish dwindling warehouse stocks. A UN flour warehouse in Gaza, full a week ago, now stands empty, the guttural sounds of trucks replaced by the chirping of pigeons in the rafters. Another warehouse holds just a few crates of lunch meat, while the space usually filled with oil and powdered milk is taken up by air conditioners for medical centres yet to be built. The crisis is only the latest since Islamic militants from Hamas overran the Gaza Strip last year. Hamas and Israel are bitter enemies.
