splenectomy

A surgical procedure of removal of the spleen. It may be needed to receive blood transfusions to ensure enough blood cells and a pneumococcal vaccine and other vaccines for the risk of infection. (Causes) • ruptured spleen: To treat internal bleeding due to a severe abdominal injury or splenomegaly. • splenomegaly: To treat pain and a feeling of fullness. • blood disorder: E.g. idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, polycythemia vera, thalassemia, only after other treatments have failed to reduce the symptoms. • cancer: E.g. chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, hairy cell leukemia. • infection: To treat a severe infection or abscess in the spleen, if it does not respond to other treatment. • noncancerous cyst or tumor: If they are inside the spleen becoming large or difficult to remove completely. (Prognosis) • Likely to contract serious infections. It is recommend to receive vaccines against pneumonia, influenza, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), and meningococci. • Recommend to take preventive antibiotics in case of increased risk of serious infections.
