A grey wolf pack roams its territory in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during a snowy winter. Grey wolves were documented in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem back in 1872 when the national park was originally established. Over time the wolves were hunted due to perceived conflicts with game species and livestock until the 1940’s when they were rarely seen. By the middle of the century, wolves were almost completely lost from the lower 48 states. After the grey wolf was classified as an endangered species in 1974, efforts began the following year to restore a population in Yellowstone. However, it was not until 1995 that 31 wolves were relocated to the park from western Canada. In January of 2020, there were approximately 100 wolves in the national park, and there are over 500 estimated to be in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Filmed in 5K 360.
