In industries where composure is prized and vulnerability is suppressed, silence is often mistaken for strength. But what if the key to safer, more inclusive workplaces lies in the stories men aren’t telling? Dr. Mark McBride-Wright, MBE, a safety engineer and global inclusion advocate, believes we’ve been having the wrong conversation about equality. Drawing from his lived experience as a gay man in engineering and his pioneering SAFE Leadership framework (Share, Act, Feel, Empower), Mark reveals how emotional honesty among men can unlock cultures of deeper connection, belonging, and psychological safety. This talk challenges traditional ideas of leadership and offers a reframe: that when men share their inner world, they are not showing weakness, but strength. And in doing so, they become catalysts for broader inclusion. Through real-world examples and powerful insights, Mark invites audiences to see leadership as a vehicle for healing, not just performance. His message is clear: we don’t need to have all the answers to hold space for someone else’s story. Dr. Mark McBride-Wright MBE, CEng, FIChemE, FEI is an award-winning safety engineer, author, and global thought leader on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and mental health in engineering. He is the founder of EqualEngineers and the creator of The SAFE Leader, a pioneering leadership framework helping organisations foster psychologically safe, high-performing cultures through the lens of safety and public speaking. Mark received an MBE in King Charles III’s Birthday Honours for his services to engineering, and has earned his “rainbow stripes” after founding InterEngineering in 2013—the UK’s largest network for LGBTQ+ engineers. His accolades include the British LGBT Awards’ “Corporate Rising Star” and a top 3 ranking in the Financial Times Future LGBT Leaders list. Driven by a desire to tackle the engineering sector’s hidden mental health crisis, Mark launched groundbreaking research into Masculinity in Engineering in 2018 and has since worked to reframe how the profession addresses emotional safety and inclusion. His consultancy, EqualEngineers, has delivered training to thousands across major employers such as Airbus, ExxonMobil, McLaren F1, and Rolls-Royce. Based in London, Mark travels internationally delivering keynote talks, consulting, and running leadership courses across Europe and North America. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
