Meet Mr. Ahmed and his daughter Baby Ruqayam, a bright 4-year-old girl from Iraq who came to Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hyderabad. Referred by Iraq’s Ministry of Health, Baby Ruqayam underwent the second stage of surgery for Diastematomyelia, a severe congenital spinal condition she has been battling since birth. Dr. Alok Ranjan, Consultant Neurosurgeon, identified that her wedge of the bone was compressing her spinal cord, affecting her mobility. Although complex, the procedure was successful, and Dr. Alok Ranjan removed the bone completely. Despite the progress, she suffers from a congenital spinal condition called Spinal Bifida, for which corrective surgery is planned in four years to restore her spine alignment. Dr. Alok Ranjan explains that such conditions are often caused by nutritional deficiencies, particularly a lack of folic acid during pregnancy, which is common in developing countries. He highlights the availability of national health programmes that provide regular folic acid supplements to pregnant women, significantly reducing such conditions.
