Julius Erving won the First ever slam dunk contest, back when it was an ABA event, but nearly a decade later, the NBA brought it back as the event it's known as today, and back in 1984, a third year forward named Larry Nance, defeated the Dr. to be crowned the First NBA Slam Dunk Champion. But outside of his all star weekend spectacle, Larry Nance had been proving himself as one of the league's best up and coming players on a Phoenix Suns team featuring guys like Dennis Johnson, Walter Davis and Maurice Lucas during his time there. Nance would spend the first half of his career in Phoenix, pulling off numerous highlight reel dunks and overall acting as one of the most effiicient scorers in the NBA, and on defense, he was known for his rim protection, and to this day remains one of the greatest shot blockers in NBA history. After 1987 Phoenix Suns cocaine scandal, Nance was a casuality as the Suns cleaned house. But he ended up in Cleveland, where he would team with Mark Price, Brad Daugherty and Hot Rod Williams for the second half of his career, recreating himself as a back to the basket and pick and pop player, with an automatic mid range jumper, while anchoring the defense, and although they could never get past Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, Nance's arrival played a key role in the most succesful era of Cleveland Cavaliers basketball pre-Lebron James. And while those great Cavs teams are known as that, great teams, you can't have great teams without great players, and Larry Nance is one of the forgotten greats. https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
