At the 2025 UN civil society consultations on Palestinian rights, Maya Yavin, director of Zochrot NGO, delivered a powerful and deeply personal statement confronting Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Speaking “as someone who is part of the society committing these crimes,” she called out systemic violence and displacement as part of a continuous process that began with the 1948 Nakba. “This is not a rupture from the past. It is its continuation,” she said, linking current events in Gaza to a legacy of forced expulsion, massacres, and erasure. Maya challenged dominant narratives and called silence “not an option,” emphasizing the moral imperative to “confront the ongoing institutionalized violence against the Palestinian people.” Maya urged the UN to take bold action: to hold Israel accountable for apartheid and genocide, revoke the Jewish National Fund’s charitable status, and suspend Israel’s participation in the UN for violating its membership conditions. “Decolonization is the only framework that addresses the root cause of injustice,” she declared, rejecting Zionist supremacy and advocating for the Palestinian right of return as “a promise of shared life, justice, and collective liberation.” Her speech called for global solidarity and truth-telling as radical acts, warning that without justice for refugees and an end to apartheid, sustainable peace is impossible.
