BMW 330d Test Review

The current G20 generation of the iconic 3 Series has definitely moved the game onward and upward in the congested, but ever popular, compact executive class. We previously tested the 330i, powered by the 2L turbo petrol. Much about the car is similar, so I will concentrate on the differences in this review. Powered by BMW's sublime straight 6 3L turbodiesel this time, this is a great example of a modern performance diesel yet still offering the massive torque and fuel consumption advantages. To compare, the petrol version offers 190kW and 400Nm, the 330d ups this to 195kW and a massive 580Nm. As always, the power is transmitted to the rear wheels through the BMW 8 speed automatic gearbox offering multi-modes that actually alter the mapping as well as suspension and handling of the car. The stand out factor of the 330d is the fuel consumption. Starting with our now standard fuel route, a figure of 5.5L/100km promised something special. The rest of the week proved this, in spite of a famous MotorMatters road trip into the country using sport mode liberally and then the usual commuting duty. The final figure was an overall 5.9L/ 100km. For the rest, the car remains generic BMW and particularly 3 series. This is no complaint, the 3 Series is a great place to spend your motoring life, especially in the drivers seat. To conclude, many manufacturers offer numerous derivatives within a range like the 3 series. In my humble opinion, the 330d is the sweet spot in this case. The base price of a 330d is currently R836 100 but, as always, the sky is the limit when you start ticking option boxes. Have fun but be careful and selective.
