The Gold Rush (1925) written and directed by, and starring, Charlie Chaplin is the film that Chaplin himself cited as his favorite of all his films. This scene, in which Chaplin attempts to complete with mining town tough guy (played by Malcolm Waite) for the affections of a "love-at-first-sight" saloon girl (played by Georgia Hale) features the Tramp's endearing sweetness and brilliant comedic timing! Based on the real -life late 19th-century gold rush in Alaska's Klondike region, and set in a typical mining "boom" town (near the legendary Donner Pass traversed by many actual gold rush miners), Chaplin's THE GOLD RUSH is a classic among classics of the silent film genre. The film is in the public domain and video footage was downloaded from Wikimedia Commons. This video recut was edited by Scott Watson, whose original music is used throughout.
