Mark Hamel is a Lean/Six Sigma implementation consultant and award-winning author of the Kaizen Event Fieldbook. Mark also created and writes the Lean blog “Gemba Tales.” The always-busy author is also the cofounder of another blog, “Lean Math.” Mark writes columns for Quality Digest as well. Mr. Hamel has successfully coached Lean leaders, and conducted numerous training sessions and workshops. He has organized hundreds of Kaizen events. These events are an important part of the continuous improvement philosophy known as Kaizen. Kaizen events are held typically with a specific goal in mind, such as optimizing certain job tasks or finding opportunities to improve work flow. Instead of small changes over a long period time, a timeline is set with a start date and an end date (typically a three day or five day event) and the only improvements made are within the scope defined. As a facilitator of Kaizen events, getting employees and management involved is key to a successful event. These team members will work together to generate ideas for improving customer satisfaction, a product or service, or working to improve a current process. In this episode we discuss value stream mapping the current state of processes, process improvement, one-piece flow, choosing event team members, eliminating waste, how to implement a Kaizen event, and much more!
