Album: Boston Year: 1976 Follow us on X: @GxaxRock The song was written by Tom Scholz (Boston’s founder and guitarist) with lyrics co-written by Brad Delp (lead vocalist). Tom Scholz recorded much of the album in his basement studio, using self-designed equipment, which gave “Smokin’” its crisp, larger-than-life sound. An early version of the song written and recorded in 1973, titled "Shakin", appears from the Mother's Milk Sessions. This tape reveals that originally, the song had a different meaning. It's about living fast, chasing thrills, and possibly alluding to marijuana use (though the lyrics are vague enough to be open to interpretation): “Smokin', smokin' / We're cookin' tonight, just keep on tokin' / Smokin', smokin' / I feel alright, mama, I'm not jokin’.” The track features Scholz’s signature guitar riffs, layered production, and Delp’s soaring vocals and showcases Boston’s polished, arena-ready sound with a driving rhythm, intricate guitar work, and a notable organ solo. While not as commercially huge as “More Than a Feeling” or “Peace of Mind,” “Smokin’” became a staple in classic rock radio and is often praised for capturing the band’s live energy.
