In November 2014, the Maire family from France was hit by a tragedy; their 5-year-old daughter Luan was diagnosed with leukemia. Her mother and father wanted to take care of their little one, be there around the clock and always be there for her. But that is easier said than done. Father Frederic is a truck driver and wsa sometimes away on a journey for days. So he asked his boss for an unpaid holiday period; he wanted to help his daughter in the fight against this serious illness despite his family really depending on his salary. About four weeks later Frederik received the aforementioned letter from his company, and what the young family father read, well he could hardly believe his eyes. “We would like to inform you that your colleagues have decided to donate 262.5 holiday days to you!” A holiday donation? Does something like that even exist? It does! Since May 2014 there is a law in France that states that in the case of serious issues or illness an employee is able to receive a holiday donation from his colleagues. Through this extremely selfless contribution from his colleagues Frederic has spent more than a year with his daughter without having to worry about money.
