When the Institution was formed, boiler explosions were an almost daily occurrence with great loss of life. Since then, members have improved all aspects of pressure systems design and operation so that accidents and loss of life are now a rare occurrence. Whilst it may seem a mature technology, new challenges continue to occur. Some such as hydrogen technology and the latest generation of nuclear build require technology developments. Others such as legislation changes (including Brexit) and management of ageing equipment operating beyond its original design life require guidance on best practice. This webinar will identify the key landmarks in the development of Pressure Systems technology and how the UK has led many of the developments in technology. Case studies from some of the significant failures will illustrate the hazards presented and how they could have been prevented. The webinar will then address the exciting future developments including hydrogen technology, Net Zero carbon, sustainable design, and additive manufacture. Professor David Nash, University of Strathclyde
