Children in Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu are being protected against cervical cancer, pneumococcal, and rotavirus diseases through the rollout of an expanded vaccination program. With funding from ADB’s Asian Development Fund, in partnership with UNICEF, government health services have been able to purchase the new vaccines. Cold-chain equipment, such as vaccine fridges, are also now available in more clinics making it easier for families to access the vaccination program. For the two infant vaccines, immunization rates are now above 85% in most countries. For the human papillomavirus vaccine, which protects against cervical cancer, uptake has been slower among adolescent girls. By protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases, ADB is helping to support healthier and more resilient communities across the Pacific.
