In 2024, the HUD Point-in-Time Count showed 32,882 veterans experiencing homelessness on a single night across the U.S.—a decrease from the year before, thanks to VA housing programs, but still 32,882 people who served and ended up sleeping on the street, in cars, or in shelters. Many more cycle in and out every year, facing the same fight over and over. And the silent epidemic: the VA's 2024 report (covering 2022 data) recorded 6,407 veteran suicides—an average of about 17.6 per day. That's a national total, with rates 57% higher than non-veterans overall. Firearms are involved in about 73-74% of cases, and the risk is especially high for younger veterans (18-34), women, and those in rural areas or with untreated PTSD, TBI, substance use, or isolation after service. We got the send-off with claps and flags. We came back to waitlists, denials, stigma, and a system that often feels like it's forgotten we exist. Many end up homeless because of mental health struggles, job loss, or just the sheer weight of readjusting to civilian life without the structure they knew. Many take their own lives because the pain—visible or invisible—becomes too heavy, and the support feels too far away. That's the problem. That's why I wrote “Clap and Forget” It’s not about blame. It’s about the gap between what we promise our veterans and what we actually deliver. It’s about the silence that follows the claps. If you know a veteran struggling, reach out. If you don’t, just listen.
