Mary Delany's great gift was that she was able to observe. In her 70s, she began to "imitate" flowers with cut paper -- some of the earliest collage work known in the West -- which she called "Paper Mosaiks". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_De... Words written and read by deborah harris, artist-in-residence at Gallery Arcturus who specializes in collage. (Full text below). ... "Each of us inhabits the restrictions of time and place, the architecture and fashion of history, rooms of furniture and pretense. But a flower is a miracle which does not conform to any such structure or idea. To observe a flower one can not but be awed and humbled by its perfection. In the attempt to imitate such perfection one can not but enter into a relationship of respect and love for its creator. Mrs Delaney was one who observed and in observing tried to imitate the exquisite details of hundreds of species of flowers. "In her work we are reminded of a perfection that is all too easy for us to overlook. Knowing that what we are seeing has been meticulously crafted, every stamen and petal, thorn and leaf cut from paper, first prepared with pigments, ground by hand and mixed in solutions to recreate the subtle shades and colours that usually evade our fleeting sideways glance. Each of her flower collages, placed always on a black background, holds our attention on the beauty which she herself beheld." -deborah harris
