No gland, no problem?

No thyroid gland, no problem? It’s actually more complicated than you think. I have had several clients who have either had a thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland) or had their thyroid destroyed (through radioactive iodine) because of a Graves’ Disease or hyperthyroidism diagnosis, or because there was abnormal cell growth in the gland. Many allopathic practitioners use thyroidectomy or ablation as the cure-all and think that medicating with T4 to replace the missing thyroid hormone will just fix the problem. But it’s not always that simple. One particular client had suspicious cell growth that, after coming back cancer-free from a biopsy, the physician still recommended removing the gland. Now the client is frustrated because he’s on a rollercoaster of symptoms as they tinker with the correct dosing. Removing the thyroid gland doesn’t erase the fact that there could still be an inflammatory immune response still happening. It also doesn’t remove what’s driving the immune response. It essentially makes you the same as those diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The replacement hormone will only do so much in the body. There is a small amount of T3 that’s actually made at the gland - the rest is made in the peripheral tissues. If there’s still an autoimmune response happening within the body, that will actually impede the ability for your body to convert T4 into T3.
