Rethinking Taiwan Workshop 2025 "New Interpretations of Taiwan History and Identity" Chia-Chiun Shih Chen, 2024-25 Visiting Fellow of Practice; Chairperson, Shih Ming-Te Cultural Foundation Hardy Stewart, 2024-25 Hou Family Post-Doctoral Fellow in Taiwan Studies, Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies Sarah Plovnick, 2024-25 Hou Family Pre-Doctoral Fellow in Taiwan Studies, Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies Moderator: David Der-wei Wang, Edward C. Henderson Professor of Chinese Literature, Harvard University The Rethinking Taiwan Workshop—moderated by Professor David Der-wei Wang (Harvard University)— brings Fairbank Center Visiting Fellow of Practice Chia-Chiun Shih Chen together with our two 2024-25 Hou Family Fellows in Taiwan Studies, Sarah Plovnick and Hardy Stewart, for a conversation on new interpretations of Taiwan’s history, its present identity, and its cultural narratives. Chen, the widow of political activist Shih Ming-teh, explores the legacy of surveillance and informant networks during Taiwan’s White Terror and their impact on democratization; Stewart examines classical Chinese poet Hong Qisheng (1866-1928), focusing on marginality and cultural expression; and Plovnick explores new ways of helping people understand Taiwan with an excerpt from her upcoming new video series. Together, these presentations offer fresh perspectives on Taiwan’s complex political and cultural evolution. April 17, 2025
