Crane Wind Ensemble, Brian Doyle, conducting, Nov. 21, 2016. This is the second in my trilogy of wind ensemble works written just after I graduated from Crane and was invited to join its faculty teaching music theory and double bass (1963). Like the first work in the trilogy, my Rondo for Band, this is also both reflective and dynamic, exploring a wide range of wind ensemble expressive possibilities. The influence of Sibelius is fading but still present. Sarah Becker's English horn playing is superb and carries the performance, along with the oboe playing of Christopher Leech. Incidentally, this was performed with a blinding blizzard outside, not unusual for Potsdam in November.
