How The Thyroid Gland Works: What Doctors (And Patients) MISS!

Your thyroid gland is the single most important hormone-producing gland in your body and it's often completely misunderstood by both patients and doctors. This leads to way too many thyroid patients being misdiagnosed and feeling poorly for way too long. Let's change that by discussing how the thyroid gland actually works so that you can understand whether or not your symptoms are, in fact, related to your thyroid or due to some other problem. Here's how it works: In the brain your hypothalamus produces TRH. TRH then signals to the pituitary gland which produces TSH. TSH then stimulates the thyroid gland to produce T4 and T3. T4 gets converted to T3 where it acts on your cells and results in changes to your DNA and the production of proteins and enzymes. Thyroid hormone then goes back to your brain where it either stimulates the hypothalamus or not. So where do doctors go wrong? They go wrong because they only test for the TSH which only looks at the communication between your pituitary gland and your thyroid gland. But it misses problems that can exist in the hypothalamus, in the T4 to T3 conversion pathway, and in the sensitivity of your cells to thyroid hormone. For this reason, if you want to accurately check your thyroid you MUST order more than just the TSH. You should get the TSH, free T4, free T3, and thyroid antibodies at LEAST.
