Scar Removal or Scar Revision Plastic Surgery & CO2 Laser for cosmetic Scar rejuvenation

Every person has some scars somewhere on their bodies, but the scars on faces & exposed parts of body bother us the most. Scars may be due to skin infections, injury, burns or surgery . Scar revision surgery aims to improve the appearance of an existing scar so that it is less conspicuous and blends in with the surrounding skin tone and texture. Scars gradually mature & improve to some extent by themselves over six months to one year time.  Hence surgery to revise a scar is usually carried out after at least six months after the original injury or operation.  During Scar revision surgery, the scar is removed & sutured in layers using very fine special suture materials. Care is taken to have the new final revised scar less noticeable & hence planned to lie in natural creases or relaxed skin tension lines. Scar revision is done in one or more stages depending on the type & size of scar. For small area of scars it is usually done under local anesthesia. Plastic surgeon puts extra reinforcing absorbable sutures deep in the layers of the skin to help hold the wound edeges together & to have smaller & thinner scar.   After surgery paper tape or steri-strips are used in perpendicular direction to the scar line for several months to help keep the scar from widening. Most scars can be improved with plastic surgery , but scars will not vanish completely without a trace. Hence, it should be emphasized that, no scar can be removed completely; however, plastic surgeons can often improve the appearance of a scar, making it less obvious.  After plastic surgery , application of certain medications , creams, gels , pressure garments & silicon sheets can further improve the cosmetic appearance of scars. Also sun protection is advised for about six months following scar revision surgery to prevent darkening of scars.  In selected cases CO2 fractional laser combined with Microneedling can be used for further cosmetic improvement of scars.  Patient should strictly follow all instructions & medications advised by plastic surgeon after the surgery for getting best results.
