About this trek Day 1: MIRIK TO SANDAKPHU We began our journey with a shared taxi ride from Mirik to Sukhia, followed by another local taxi ride from Sukhia to Manaybhanjyang. From there, we booked an iconic Series 1 Land Rover, aptly fitting for Sandakphu, known as the land of Land Rovers. As we embarked on our journey, our internet connection started to fade, and soon we were without network coverage. The scenic route offered breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and vibrant rhododendron trees as we ascended to higher altitudes. We arrived in Sandakphu in the evening and hiked a short 1 km to Aal Dara (Nepal side), where we were treated to a stunning sunset. We spent the night at Pinky Homestay, braving the disturbing wind and clanking metal roof sheets. Day 2: SANDAKPHU TO PHALUT We started the day with a majestic sunrise view of Mt. Kanchenjunga. After breakfast, we embarked on a 20 km trek to Phalut. The road was almost empty and barren, with occasional sightings of highland cattle and their shelters. We were treated to stunning views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Everest , Mt. Makalu and other Himalayan range throughout the route. Exhausted and hungry, we stopped at a tent shop near Sabargram and ate noodles. Thanks to Ajay, our meal was ready and waiting for us at Sabargram. Rejuvenated, we continued our trek to Phalut, arriving around 4 pm. We stayed in Yangtaru Goatstay on the Nepal side of Phalut, also known as Falelung. Our hosts were warm and welcoming, providing cozy rooms and a comfortable stay. Day 3: PHALUT TO GORKHEY We rose early and hiked to Phalut Top, where the borders of India, Nepal, and Sikkim (before it became a part of India) converge. The windswept summit offered breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan range. Unfortunately, the strong winds forced us to cut our visit short. After descending to our goatstay, we fueled up with breakfast and checked out. Our trek then took us downwards to Gorkhey, marking the end of the barren landscape and the beginning of the lush Singalila forests. The dense woods were teeming with giant trees, bamboo, and the famous rhododendron. We kept our eyes peeled for a glimpse of the elusive Red Panda, while also being mindful of potential encounters with wild bears and other wild animals. The downward trek was gentle on our spirits, but challenging for our knees and ankles. We took regular breaks to rest and rejuvenate, eventually arriving at Gorkhey Forest Village around 1 pm, just in time for lunch. We settled into our cozy stay at Paradise Homestay and spent the evening relaxing and unwinding. Day 4: GORKHEY TO RAMMAM TO MIRIK Our final day began with an early start, as we rushed to catch our vehicle in Rammam, scheduled to depart at 9:30 am. We trekked continuously for 2 hours, taking only brief breaks along the way. Our pace was swift, and I barely had time to capture our journey on camera, resulting in some shaky footage. Fortunately, our tardiness was forgiven, and the driver waited for us to board. We then proceeded to Rimbick, where we indulged in the luxury of internet access after days of disconnection. Later that afternoon, we took a sharing taxi directly from Rimbick to Mirik, bringing our incredible four-day trek to a close.
