1963 Original Vintage Olympic White / Blonde Stratocaster : The Holy Grail of Strats ! For SALE here: https://reverb.com/item/43628812-fend... 1963 Custom Color Original Finish Stratocaster: From Gruhn Guitars: Nashville: Guitar was appraised on May 15th 2020. We certify the instrument described below is, in our opinion, a Fender Stratocaster model electric guitar, made late in the year 1963 or early in the year 1964. Description: Serial number: L156XX – die-stamped on metal neck attachment plate. The neck attachment plate serial number of this instrument could indicate a date of manufacture in the year 1963 or 1964, but is insufficient to indicate a definitive date because these plates were stamped in large quantities and then used in random order so the numbers do not strictly correspond to the final assembly dates. They also can be easily changed and do not serve as an indicator of originality for an entire instrument. However, the neck code (2 Dec 63 B – indicates a Stratocaster model neck produced during December of the year 1963 with a “B” profile) is consistent with this guitar being originally assembled late in the year 1963 or early in the year 1964. Data retrieved from the potentiometer manufacturing date codes (in this example they are partially covered in solder) can also provide more specific information relevant to the original assembly date. It is interesting to note that the Werner List exhibits other Fender instruments with sequentially nearby neck plate serial numbers and neck date codes in November and December of the year 1963. The body of this guitar features what appears to be a Fender factory original Blond finish (considered to be a common custom color). Upon examination, we note the following modifications and condition issues: the pickguard is cracked at both of the neck pickup height-adjustment screw locations, two extra screw holes have been added and the treble-side tip is broken off, one of the original white plastic “skirt style” tone control knobs has been replaced with a black plastic knob of historically incorrect appearance, the metal hardware exhibits significant corrosion (typical of contact with “acid sweat”), the fingerboard exhibits significant areas of surface material loss (divots) due to fingernail friction wear, the frets exhibit significant wear (and the guitar would benefit greatly from a fingerboard re-fret), and the Fender logo peghead decal, tremolo arm and removable metal bridge cover are all missing. The finish appears to be original and exhibits significant deterioration with lacquer checking, small impact marks, surface scratches, compression marks, edge-chipping and extensive sweat stains. In other respects, this instrument conforms to the typical specifications of the model for the period in which it was made with double-cutaway alder solid body, 11-screw multi-ply beveled-edge “mint-green” pickguard (in use from mid-1959 through early 1965), integral tremolo/bridge assembly (non-tremolo version was also available, but is much less common), three single-coil pickups, white plastic “skirt-style” control knobs (only two of the three originals are now present), three-position blade-type pickup selector switch with white plastic tip, maple neck with adjustable truss-rod (adjustment at heel end of neck), single-line Kluson Deluxe tuners with metal buttons (in use from 1957 through 1964), one rectangular elevated “butterfly” string tree, 21-fret Brazilian rosewood veneer fingerboard with “narrow clay dot” inlays (narrow spacing at 12th fret was in use from mid-year 1963 through February 1965, four-bolt metal neck attachment plate with die-stamped serial number, chrome-plated metal hardware, and other typical Stratocaster model appointments. The instrument is currently housed in the original rectangular hard-shell case with brown Tolex exterior covering and red plush interior lining.
